Had some problems getting Writelog to network a Win95 and WinXP
machine. Resolved it after some time using Ethereal (terrific, free Ethernet
LAN sniffer program - http://www.ethereal.com). Solution is simple, it's a
Windows issue...
In generating the NETBIOS table, Win95 maps all computer names to
UPPER CASE, and truncates the name at the first space character. Thus
"Ham Station 2" maps to "HAM" in the NETBIOS table. Win95 does not map
the name as far as Windows networking is concerned, so the computer name
shows up as "Ham Station 2" in all windows. You can view the NETBIOS table
in any version of Windows from a DOS command prompt: nbtstat -c
(lower case c).
WinXP does not perform this mapping when generating the NETBIOS
table. Thus, if your WinXP machine has any lower case characters or
embedded spaces in it's name, it will network fine with windows file
and folder sharing, but cannot ever be reached via NETBIOS from a Win95
machine. Change the WinXP computer name to all upper case, with no embedded
spaces, and then it will be reachable from Win95 via NETBIOS.
