John,

This may be a classic example of how not to do it. I have my shack in a
room in my basement. I have cable internet service with the Syslink modem
and Syslink router located in my shack and sitting 1 inch to the left of my
Alpha 87A. I like to be able to monitor the indicator LEDs. Two CAT 5
unshielded twisted pair cables service the shack computers with another two
cables going to upstairs computers. The cables that go upstairs are routed
through a 2" x 6" slot in the wall which also holds all my coax/rotor cables
going out to the tower. All that being said, I get no communication
problems with the cable internet that I can detect; even running full power
and for extended periods of time during contests. I do have all my radio
equipment grounded to an 8 foot ground rod pounded through the basement
floor just behind the radio table. One of the computers in the shack is an
HP and the other is homebrew with both using Pentium 4 processors. I use
Windows to network the computers to each other and to peripherals.

I would not invite emulation but just to let you know that a minimalist
system works.
