I've heard that, but my limited experience says it isn't true.
I have XP pro running on this lap top that I bought last Dec .. a year ago.
For the first several months it was NEVER connected to the internet and I
never called anyone at MS to activate the OS. Of course, it could be that
this "registration" was done for me by the lap top vendor. I have a full
copy of XP pro that I got as an MS subscriber, but I've never tried a cold
install.
I prefer Win98se.

You can call Microsoft on the telephone to activate your software. If you
don't activate it within 30 days, it will stop working.
