I think it "may" be a memory leak, a common enough problem with many
applications. I didn't mention this before but this problem exhibits
itself on two of my dedicated and networked contest computers. The
computers don't exhibit these symptoms when running any other software
and, as they are dedicated to my ham stations, don't run anything else but
Symantec 2002 anti-virus software and WriteLog during cw or ssb contests.
One runs ME and the other 98 Second Edition. Both have all the latest
patches installed.
I use a free utility called StartupCop that checks to make sure there is
nothing else running on the computer when it boots, very handy for
ensuring a clean startup. It also allows for different boot profiles if
needed. This may help some machines with minimal RAM to at least extend
the period of time you need to reboot. You can download this application

There are a number of utilities that maps memory usage by application
which I'll run during the next contest, we'll see what it says.
