Phil, if I remember from my earlier days of Packet with my TS440 (early
model), indeed the mic input is too sensitive for a lot of modulation (a
KAM), especially from a sound card. Look at the 13 pin connector pinouts and
you will see places to hook up audio input, as in the case of packet. This
allows you to adjust the input audio (with external pot, or use "Line Out"
on sound card if you have it) without affecting the mic gain on the front
panel. However, the mic is still ON whenever you input PTT via the 13 pin
connector! This adds noise, etc to you modulated signal if the mic gain is
turned up, sometimes bad enough to prevent my packet from connecting. I
installed a small signal diode in the same connector to a mike mute pin,
again somewhere in the 13 pin connector from the PTT. This way when I keyed
the TX with the PTT, I would also ground the mike mute to silence the
microphone input. It worked for me.
I'm sorry I can't give more detail as I sold off the TS440 a while back.
After a few years, it's hard to remember. Look carefully at the pin-outs and
the schematic and give it a try with the 13 pin connector in the back, it's
much cleaner that way and lets you quickly switch back and forth between
digital modes and SSB.
