I had pretty bad snow static right from the get- go. It started snowing
while I was hiking up the hill. I did work KA3fQS right through the
snow static on SSB. Static was at about S5. It got up to S7 and then
faded for a few minutes. When it came back again at about 00:40 I put
up with it for 15 minutes but it was only getting louder, so I pulled
the plug and trudged home in the snow storm. We got about 5" from the
looks of it. I did try with K3SK when the static was minimal and heard
lots of meteors but no tropo signal. It turns out K3SK was aimed at the
wrong heading, so a contact was not possible. I did work KA2ENE,
WA3NUF, N3ITT, WZ1V, WA1MBA, K1OR, WB2VVV in New Hampshire at his ski
chalet. and W1AIM. I also tried with KC2KAE/1 who was in Lincoln NH at
Loon Mountain Ski area. He heard me on his HT but I could not detect
him. It was rough with the snow static. My 1st contact was W1AW/1 in
Vermont on SSB. Hiram was good copy. When I strapped on the snow shoes
and headed home, my trail was almost gone. The snow had filled in my
track. Better luck next time! Thanks to all who braved the elements.
