Hello Good Buddy Ron,
I had an interesting day. The wind was howling early in the day.
Everything in my yard was getting blown away. All the old 8" stove pipe
from my stove replacement project got blown out of my yard, saving me
from taking them to the dump. Unfortunately the winds toppled a few
trees on to the power lines and I lost power and my internet connection.
I had just finished up an e mail reminder for 222 Activity Night but I
could not send it. I was all prepared to get on early and look for
stations as the Moon rose on the East Coast and midwest. Well, that
didn't happen. I went up anyway with no internet connection, so I could
not check in to the chat pages. I also realized that I had lost my time
sync and could not look for folks on FT8 or EME either. That was a
bummer. I did talk to WA2LTM mentioning my problem and he counted down
the seconds for me while I checked my time. It looked like I was pretty
darn close without any connection, so I tried FT8 and decoded people. I
worked WA4YA and K3WHC along with N1SV. So then I figured I would try
aiming at the Moon and hunting for Q65 signals without knowing where
anyone was located. It was slow and tedious, but I eventually saw a
signal. It was W6TCP in sunny California. He was calling CQ, so I
answered and we had a great QSO with good signals all around. Then I
head W7JW calling W6TCP after me, so I hung around and worked Jeff after
they finished. Signals were bordering on bodacious. Jeff's 8 X yagis
are really playing. He is very loud now. I spent some time moving
frequency, and then looking for decodes. Without coordination it is well
nigh impossible to find stations in a reasonable amount of time. I quit
and went back to the horizon at about 01:30 UT and heard no signals. I
was so bummed out that I quit early. When I got home, the XYL was
watching TV and the internet was back on. If I had hung around for ten
more minutes, I would have been connected up again and making EME
contacts, working guys like KA2ENE and W9KXI out in the wilds of New
York State!! I missed him along with W9KXI, WA3DRC, KA1OJ, and W1AUV. I
ended up with 18 Qs including the two EME stations.
The good thing about the day was that I did finish the new wood stove
install and have it fired up and working. The XYL is happy now that we
are warm again. I was happy that the old stove pipe blew away so I don't
have to go to the dump!
