Your noble effort to provide your buddies with their first microwave
experience (and enhance your score) runs afoul of the general ARRL
contesting rule STTN1:
Station and Equipment Restrictions STTN.1. A transmitter used to contact
one or more stations may not be subsequently used under any other call
sign during the contest period.....
The exceptions to that rule do not apply to your scenario unless a
family member is also separately licensed.
In addition, the equipment must be be capable of operation at a distance
of 1 km per rule STTN6:
STTN.6. While no minimum distance is specified for contacts, equipment
should be capable of communications at a range of at least 1 km.
To abide by the ARRL rules you could share your spare 1296 transceiver
with ONE of your local friends.

this contest?
I'd expect to see the result being submission of my log (with the half dozen or
so 1296 MHz QSOs) and some/most/all of my ham friend's (each with the single
1296 MHz QSO.)
