Dave,

Your noble effort to provide your buddies with their first microwave experience (and enhance your score) runs afoul of the general ARRL contesting rule STTN1:

Station and Equipment Restrictions STTN.1. A transmitter used to contact one or more stations may not be subsequently used under any other call sign during the contest period.....

The exceptions to that rule do not apply to your scenario unless a family member is also separately licensed.

In addition, the equipment must be be capable of operation at a distance of 1 km per rule STTN6:

STTN.6. While no minimum distance is specified for contacts, equipment should be capable of communications at a range of at least 1 km.

To abide by the ARRL rules you could share your spare 1296 transceiver with ONE of your local friends.

Have fun in the contest.

I have built a pair of portable homebrew 1296 MHz SSB/CW transceivers (a
project that's been underway for a long time). They put out 100 mW, have a

done mostly as a learning opportunity.

I'd like to use the pair of radios to provide "first microwave QSO" opportunity
to some local ham friends (none of whom have ever been on 1296 MHz) during the upcoming
ARRL 222 MHz+ (aka UHF) contest on August 5-6, 2023.

My thought is to drive to each of the friends home QTH, provide one of the two radios for
temporary use (during my visit time), drive a short distance away (the radio's range from
what I can tell is <1 km through an obstructed path from my initial testing), and conduct
a single QSO (me as rover, friend operating from their home QTH, "driveway pedestrian
portable" style.)

Is this sort of activity consistent with the spirit of roving operation for
this contest?

I'd expect to see the result being submission of my log (with the half dozen or
so 1296 MHz QSOs) and some/most/all of my ham friend's (each with the single
1296 MHz QSO.)

Thanks for any thoughts on this,
