I've had the opportunity to operate from a big gun station in NC several times. When the propagation on 6m is there, you are calling CQ on a frequency without stop. Whether SSB or CW, there are no lack of responding stations. When the propagation is absent, no amount of CQing will bring folks out of the woodwork. This is where the digital modes MSK144 for Meteor Scatter and FT8 are very useful. It is a choice that is available to use depending on the circumstances. I don't think they will replace phone and CW in VHF contesting.
