I never enter these contests to win. Single-Op QRP Portable is a category
that often has very few entrants, so I do accidentally place fairly high in
the scorings once in a while. But I do it mostly to have fun. No matter
what the scoring is.

I would want to make microwave QSO's no matter what the scoring for them
was. In fact, in the 10 GHz contest one year I took all bands between 2304
and 10368 just for fun. We tried 5760 across Lake Michigan and found it
very similar to 10 GHz. But those QSO's counted for nothing in the contest.
They were just fun experiments.
