I probably have not tried an FTDICHIP. I have three adapter cables and I have
no idea what any of them are. What I have tried, to no avail, is telling
Windows to run the software simulating XP. I changed the COM port number to a
low number. I tried three different adapter cables and even tried plugging in a
different serial cable to the GPS. Just for fun, I am going to try it on a
different computer. Also I am going to purchase another adapter based on a
couple of recommendations, including the one below.

Try a USB/serial adapter based on the FTDICHIP chipset.
