The question how to start depends on your budget.
I think you said you might rove.
 
With the 706, assuming it has 432, get a small multi-band beam, ie 2/432 beam.  
If you go to something bigger later you could use the small beam for satellite 
work.
 
On 6 meters you could make a di-pole out of rigid metal or buy 2 6 meter whips 
and a mobile di pole kit to make the whips a di- pole.  Or for around 110 bucks 
a M2 loop will work quite well.  Also a directive systems moxon does well and 
fits the width of a car.  It makes a good portable or cheap home station beam 
as well.
 
Next borrow a 222 fm rig and a mag mount for 222 and get something better if 
you enjoy the activity.
