Hi Mike. For several years I have been using a Garmin Legend handheld GPS
- not sure if these are in production anymore. Compared to newer GPS
units and pucks, its a little slower to lock when you turn it on, and its
not as sensitive a receiver, but it has been reliable and drop testing
thousands of times on many a rover trip and 10GHz outing - rugged and
reliable are two important attributes for roving. Being handheld, its a
nice size - not so small that you loose it (ok - I lost it once), but small
enough that its always residing in my Go-bag. Perhaps a used one on eBay
or at a hamfest would meet your $$ goal. Whatever you pick, make certain
that it does Maidenhead.
