Sorry to hear about you missing out this year. I didn't operate as it
had snowed the day before and driving around here (Detroit, MI) gets
tricky with all other drivers (idiots) plus it just was too cold and
windy this time around. Still planning on being active for 70cm, 6m, and
Microwave sprints though.
As for promoting and advertising the VHF+ contests, I have learned that
the only way to inform people around here is to keep track and promote
it yourself. I didn't know about the local club that setup and operated
on VHF+ until another ham told me about them and took me to their site
after a day trip for a ARRL Section meeting a few years ago. That is one
of the reasons I joined this club over renewing in the other club.
Personally, I try to open my mouth (and not insert foot in process) when
ever I can at club meetings I attend or on the radio about whats coming
up. In a way, I have become the source for the MORE exotic modes and
operations in the area., at least the MORE visible and easier to locate
person on whats happening and whats going on. I have been asked
questions about things from doing digital ATV to Satellites.
Maybe thats what we need to add to our different ARRL Section
leaderships - a position to get the word out about the different
contests and modes. WAIT - isn't that what the Technical Coordinator,
Public Information Coordinator/Officer, and Affiliated Club Coordinator
are for?
Only thing I can say after all that is to just get out there and start
making noise and asking at club meetings who is active and when. You
might be surprised who is lurking out there.
