IMHO ...

Back in the late 70's a large number of new hams, at least those in
the Houston area were, 11 meter SSB enthusiasts that got sick and
tired of putting up with the linear lipped 10-4 good buddies and went
and tested for their ticket and moved away from 11 meters altogether.
Both 50 & 144 MHz SSB produced the results necessary to keep their
interests alive.
