I think that, besides what you have described, the big problem with 
repeaters is that they utilize another transmitter that is not at YOUR 
contest location, and is not in any way connected to your operation. Having 
"satellite" re-transmitters goes against the maximum radius clause among 
other things.

Some repeaters are remotely linked with the phone system.. thus using
non-amateur means of communication..  (i'm diggin deep :-p )


more than likely is is a rule made eons ago, by someone who worked on
the contest rule committee . They lost the contest,  because their
competitor used a repeater to drum up a few more contacts. How very
unfair....
