Mike - I use a Garmin V, which is discontinued. It does the Maidenhead
grid squares. I think all of the Garmins do grid squares.

I like the Garmin V because the display can be converted from portrait
to landscape so that it can be used handheld or on its base in a car.
I don't use anywhere near all of its features. I would buy it again,
if it were still available.

Having said that, I think that you may be better off with an
inexpensive GPS. You can use it, and as it is simple you can master
it, find out the features that you want that are omitted, and then
spend the big bucks for one that does exactly what you want.

The ones with color displays designed for automobile use draw a lot of
current and eat batteries. If your rover is anything like mine, I
pause to think when I consider adding another device that draws power.

There are newer GPS units that contain a built in electronic compass
and I think that would be nice to have in a rover for determining beam
headings. The compass heading that a normal GPS has is based on
subtracting several sequential GPS readings and can be seriously in
error if you make a sharp turn right before you park to operate or if
you back up before stopping to operate. It took me two stops on my
first rove to figure this out.

I hope that this helps. - Duffey
