I've resisted replying to these statements, but my OCD is kicking in. :) I've
retitled the subject so as to help remove unnecessary confusion.

<Yes, but self spotting (which is what APRS would be) is illegal in most
contests, even in the assisted category.>

I separate "APRS" from "HamIM" when I speak on the topic. APRS is not legal to
use for ARRL-sponsored VHF Contests for the reasons that I've already outlined.
As a result, any further discussion of it it moot.
However, "HamIM" (which is APRS, reconfigured) is fine-- the ARRL said so
publicly (and is documented), and not considered "spotting" in any way, shape
or form.
As for how to maximize one's range using HamIM? That is the strategy issue
that separates competitors. It is a very good thread to follow. My HamIM
setup has been effective in reaching and engaging Rovers over an 8-grid area
(so far). It is probably better, it's just that I can't seem to get enough
Rovers interested to install it to test it in other grids (hello, VE3?).
