Steve,
Most folks are trying to work as many people in as many places (far away) as
possible. Since FM requires much more RF in order to go the same distance
and be understandable, most folks start with SSB and then if it's not making
it, we got to CW. FM might, however, get some of the local folks that are
not contesters to talk, but you can't use FM calling frequencies like 146.52
or repeaters in the contest so it might be tough to find Fmers without
these...
