Black Mountain, boy does that bring back memories. Back in the early 60ies,
I operated my first contest from Big Black using the call K4QPJ. It was not
only a five to six hour drive but we had to lug monster old tube AM rigs and
antennas up to final road to the fire tower. In those days there was a
power plug so, as least, we could avoid having to deal with a generator.
It's was/is a great place to operate a contest but I heard you can no longer
get to the top due to locked gates. Too bad.
73, Tom K6EU aka K6EU/r
PS: If anyone has QSTs from 63/64, I would appreciate know the line scores
for our efforts in ARRL contest. I think we operated in the fall of 63
contest and several others for the next two years or so. The call used was
K4QPJ, KY section.
