W8JI tried a 350 foot high half wave dipole on 160 meters for a while
and reported that it rarely if ever was better than his 1/4 wave
vertical.
For years I used an 80 meter dipole at 30 feet for a 160 meter receive
antenna. It was usually about as good as a beverage over my high
conductivity ground.
The 30 foot height was because I have a lot of 30 foot lengths of
irrigation pipe, not because of any profound reason.
