I use the same method, works very well. It's still nice to have clean
wire at the splice.

I quit soldering wire splices outside years ago. All splices are now
done with wire split bolts. I've had antenna and feedline splices
with split bolts outside for years now and _never_ had a failure yet.
Fast and easy. Wire strippers, split bolt and pliers or socket
wrenches. No soldering with a torch trying to get the heat right in a
breeze or sunlight that wipes out flame visibility, no running power
to an electric iron, no lugging all the soldering tools to a work
location....forget it. Just strip, twist and crank down the bolt as
tight as you can. Done in a few minutes.
