I have some insulators for sale here: http://w6dsr.com/misc/index.html the 2nd
item. You can see how you could make a pivot from the forked end of one
section, and then the other two legs of the tower would rest in two more
insulators with pins or bolts to hold the tower feet. These insulators are
rated to support 36,000 pounds of load.

Subject: [TowerTalk] Need ideas for 80m Vertical Foldover Base

Hi Guys,

Hoping you'll have some ideas on how I can home brew an "Insulated Fold over
Base" for an 80-meter Vertical which will be fed at the base and needs to be
insulated from ground. Related information: The bottom 32' of the Vertical will
be an Aluminum tower. The top 35' of the Vertical will be telescoping aluminum
tubing, the combined weight of the Vertical will only be about 40 pounds. I
plan to guy the tower so there won't be much torque on the fold over base. The
tower width is 16-3/4" leg center-to-center at the base and the leg diameter at
the base is 1-1/4" so a Rohn 45 tilt-over base would almost work except it
wouldn't insulate the tower from ground. One thought I've had in mind is to
purchase solid fibreglass rod that would fit inside the tower legs at the tower
base, drill holes through the center of the fibreglass rod, and then anchor
bolts through the fibreglass rod to the tower legs on the top and anchor bolts
through treated 4"x4"s on the bottom. But in this case the
rod would be a small diameter of aprx. 3/4" so the anchor bolts would be need
to be small diameter such as 3/8". Perhaps a better idea would be to purchase
fibreglass tube to fit over the tower legs and then anchor the fibreglass tube
to treated 4"x4" at the bottom? Please let me know if you have any ideas to
share on an "Insulated Fold Over Base" for an 80m. Vertical as I'd love to get
this operational within a few days for winter DX'ing. TNX & 73,Dick- K9OM
