I've had the same experience with birds w/o boom caps. But once, on my test
stand, 20m yagi with end caps, a big rain storm allowed a lot water inside.
So now I cut out a small slot on the bottom side of the cap to allow water
out. The slot is small enough to not to allow bugs or birds in.
