I wouldn't say quite random; they just have lots of lobes. A model will
give you a pretty good idea of the pattern. The big unknown will always
be the ground system loss, but that doesn't affect the pattern much,
just the gain. The high impedance of the end fed half wave multiple
minimizes that loss.
That said, I've used my 40 m EFHW on 80 with a couple long radials for
portable operation. It's not great, and there's a bit of RF in the
shack, but it works. Keep in mind this is the antenna I carry on a
bicycle, so it has to be very light. Any sort of feedline is out of the
question. Without the strict weight constraint, there are other
possibilities.
