http://en.blitzortung.org/live_lightning_maps.php 


They may not have the data right on their web sites but they do collect 
lightning strike data from a crowd-sourced system of lightning detectors 
synchronized to GPS time for strike location determination.  They do seem to 
archive the strike data for some period of time.


Good luck with your project.  Sounds interesting.
