Points well made Jim.
Would be nice if we could easily read out length of use (a good gauge of
how how well something works and lasts) from a lot of our more costly
'stuff' like rotators, xceivers, amps, control boxes and the like,
similar to how we read out the odometer in our cars.
Seems this would be a better gauge in making comparisons of products
more suited to the odometer idea. Or maybe like aeroplanes, time since
last overhaul, when applicable.
Have often thought when considering purchase of a used complex products
like a transceiver how much time it has 'on time' vs only seeing terms
like excellent condx, non-smoking environment, low-use (whatever that
means), although some of these are helpful.

People "vote" on their experience, and tend to CHOOSE the lowest cost
product. The higher cost product may be superior, but lose out in the
selection based on cost. Also, as a subscriber to three
manufacturer-focus email reflectors, I see lots of rooting for the
home team, and seeing one's choice of rig challenged as an insult!
Another factor is the product reviews tend to be written soon after
purchase, before problems develop.
A FAR better way to choose products and mechanical issues associated
with a tower is to ask the professionals who install them and fix
them. The proprietor of this list, K7LXC, is one of the best. Hector,
XE2K, is another. So are those who maintain large stations, like W3LPL
and K3LR.

I think the recommendations were primarily based on performance, not
price. No one would recommend a rotor that had poor performance,
regardless of its price.
