Thanks to everyone who replied on and off list. There are several
shortened 40/30 dipole designs around. Since I already have a full
size 40m element built and would like to believe it is mechanically
robust enough, I'm going to go with a 30m coupled resonator hanging
one foot below it.
I've been using various wire antennas on these bands for 35 years.
For the last 14 years, they have been reasonably high (75-100 feet)
but these are the two bands on which I consistently struggle with
the rare DX. Beams are out of the question. I am hoping a rotatable
dipole will be an overall improvement from the simple wire antennas.
There is only one way to know for sure!
