Gary,
All veggies are not created equal. Hydroponic gardening is a sure way to spoil
one's taste buds as I have known for many years. Russ K5ZZR

Why would anyone spend so much more for electricity to 'save' on vegetables
from an indoor garden?!
Seems, to me, at least likely, only one reason why it is there...

## pot sells for $3K a lb. And these grow-op folks get 4 x crops per year.
Do the maths, huge $$ involved. They grow pot up here by the dump truck load...
then trade it lb for lb, straight across to the the americans...for cocaine.
## we had cases of legal grow-ops, fed govt licensed to produce.... X lbs
per year, that
got busted for producing 20 X per year. Power company + cops busted a guy on
the other
side of town here, where the pole pigs are really small, like 25 kva. He was
sucking 20 kva,
and as typ, they oversize the HV fuses, and also use slo-blo types. 3 pole
pigs have caught fire,
when those things flame on, look out, flaming oil dropping down onto the
ground.
## a friend 6 blocks from me has a 50 kva xfmr on the pole across the
street. It was buzzing so
loud you could hear it from 200’ away. It got replaced. Everybody on that
street uses natural gas.
Toss in led lights, and power consumption should be minimal. Wait til
everybody jumps on the
100% electric car bandwagon. Then the entire grid will be beyond maxed out.
## with 10 db over S9 noise 24/7 on 160m, I can see where 160m is gonna be
relegated
back to the Loran days of long ago. Huge chunks if not the entire band wiped
out. A dedicated
RX array does not work too well, when say its pointed at ZL land... and is also
pointed at a noise source,
like a grow-op. Even the devices with the noise sense ant will only null out
one noise source at a time.
If you are surrounded by multiple noise sources, then what ? The little guy on
the city lot doesnt have
many options left, perhaps use a remote internet RX, but with latency, wont
work anyway.

In all my years of putting up towers I have never had such a agonizing
experience as this one. However, it may be nearing an end after starting this
process in November, 2015.
The final roadblock after, issues from the electrical reviewer, dept of solid
waste, (honest) as well as a bunch more BS is "structural analysis
calculations" of the tower.
Structural engineers are far and few on the Big island and cost for same is
outrageous. The building dept said they would accept Rohn's numbers as being
sufficient for review. Of course the Rohn handbook does not have detailed
enough info to use, other than windload etc.
I know the detailed structural analysis info is available from Rohn, but it is
a long weekend and I would like to resolve this ASAP. I also understand that
this Rohn analysis is not cheap and would like to avoid this route.
The tower is a Rohn 45 tower, 90 feet tall, guyed at 40 feet and 80 feet. Does
anyone have any structural analysis either from Rohn or from a submittal to
their building department for a tower like this or similar in height or tower
type. Also, has anyone used Rohn for this analysis, and if so what was the
cost? Any info shared would be appreciated.
It seems once they get this info I should have permit in hand in a week or so.

Thanks to all who replied on and off the reflector on my post inquiring about
electric fence chargers.
Here's the summation:
It seems like all of newer units, on AC mains or battery were quiet. The only
issue is when they either have a poor ground, or come in contact with weeds,
grass etc. Otherwise just about everyone said they had no issues with the
fences.
My fence is now activated with a unit someone was throwing away (an import from
ZL) and it seems to be working. I can here the sounds of the pissed off pigs
squealing when they touch it. I'll be getting a solar powered one, but for the
time being this one seems to do the job.

I'm sorry but that is like asking why would anyone spend so much
more for electricity to run ham radios instead of a cell phone! Many
people here in Maine use grow lights to start vegetables for outdoor
gardens early. At least a few grow vegetables to maturity indoors.
Some do it because they want home grown food even if the cost is
higher, others because gardening is as much a hobby to them as radio
is to us. To keep this on topic, I prefer to grow towers. :-)

Fair enough - good point.

You shouldn't hear pissed off pigs very long either. Two zaps per pig
maximum and they learn to stay away from the fence. Darn smart critters.

The Farwell MI 2-meter repeater was on a commercial tower about the
equivalent a city block distant from our house when we lived up there.
I did the antenna maintenance. I had to climb around a guy bracket that
was made of either 3/8ths, or 1/2 inch steel that completely enclosed
the tower. Similar plates were used higher up. Guys were 1" and looked
like wire rope. The tension? Hit one at the tower and it'd ring like a
high pitched tuning fork well above middle C.
Whether u-bolted, or wrapped around a leg, using a single leg, weakens
the tower at that point. If engineering determines the tower load is
insufficient to cause a problem, then it's fine, but I wonder what the
insurance co would say if it failed? Now days they have become very
cost conscious and look for ways to invalidate coverage.

One word...Preppers! Before long, they may outnumber the weed growers.
They want lots of fresh vegetables year round. Doing it indoors "up
here" would give three crops per year. In GA my son gets two crops per
year outdoors, but he usually has to cover the second crop a few times
If our home was larger, I'd use the newer methods of growing without
soil. Here? We don't have a garden, indoors or out.
Growing up on the farm, we rarely needed to go to town. My mother had a
large garden and a fruit cellar.
A indoor garden, even with the extra cost pretty much removes the
worries about food in case of winter storms, or possible disasters.
