Thanks Roger, a really good read!

Since you brought up "off-brand" connectors I will share my experience with some non-Amphenol UHF guys who appear to have a longer than usual screw shell. The shell can in some cases bottom out on the jack's threads not allowing the connector body the be brought up tight. I've seen on the order of almost an eighth of an inch of end play with these guys. They were found on measured lengths of RG8X cable with factory installed connectors that our club tried using at the last Field Day. Maybe you could fix them with a tubing cutter... nah, just stay away from 'em...

And then there was the budget inline SWR meter that I ran across at a hamfest a few years ago. Its UHF jacks appeared to have a metric thread. No, while everything looked like a UHF jack, the Amphenol guy wouldn't screw onto it.
