It seems to me the question isn't if AN makes good towers or whether they spec
bulletproof bases.
The question is whether an experienced, respected tower professional opining
the base may be
overkill, or whether Trylon is good enough for the average ham, rises to the
level of defamation.
The question of whether the base is overkill or underkill is meaningless
without reference to a specific soil type. I'm surprised
no one has brought that up. Possibly the manufacturer
specified a base for the worst possible soil they could imagine.
In that case, you could say it is overkill in MOST cases by
definition. At my QTH, I have "cemented hardpan". Once you get
down into that, I'm sure any "one size fits all" base design would
be severe overkill. All in all, a silly argument certainly not
worth getting excited about.
