I always love what Carroll Smith had to say about various lockwashers etc
in his book "Nuts, Bolts, Fasteners and Plumbing Handbook"
He wasn't a big fan, and does the math why once they move at all, they
become useless. He also was not a big fan of Stainless hardware as it is
weaker than grade 8, but in racing that makes a big difference. He was a
big fan of locktite, Nylock and if you were on a "Formula One Team Budget"
Jet Nuts aka K-Nuts. Other things he approved of was wiring nuts/bolts
BTW, for anyone who does any crazy mech design, it is a WONDERFUL book, if
out of print. Seriously goes into the physics of fasteners, and what can
go wrong. Suppliers etc are way out of date, but the rest, and his logic
behind his choices are well laid out
