Perhaps you are mistaken. I can only speak for myself, but I look forward
to DX contests, especially CW contests, as a great opportunity to work new
band / entities. If I operate S&P and show up in say 100 (or many more) logs
why would the contest sponsors not count my QSOs for credit in the logs that
are submitted? Besides that, if there were not for others like me, who would
all those stations running (calling CQ) work? And, as a bonus, at least for
me, most contest stations QSL via LoTW, so I get credit for a confirmed QSO
soon after the contest. So, am I a "contester"? You decide. Maybe not, but,
I'm having fun.
If I'm missing something, please enlighten me.

I have heard DX mentors suggest that contests are high potential events for
snagging some dx that wouldn't otherwise be so readily available.
But I'm not sure how the contest people would feel about that?
If ham-1 (a contest ham who will be submitting his log) makes a contact with
ham-2 (a dx chaser who won't be submitting his log) does the absence of
ham-2's log disqualify ham-1's contact with ham-2, resulting in lowering his
score?
If it works that way, I would anticipate the serious contest hams would be a
little miffed at people who use the occasion to simply add contacts to their
personal log book.
But perhaps I'm mistaken?
