A 1/2-wave loop should be open opposite the feedpoint, and not closed.
It will be low-Z only on the fundamental and odd harmonics. It doesn't work
the same as a full-wavelength (closed) loop, but might work fine in two
directions and maybe better than the vertical in those two.

Subject: [TowerTalk] Quad help
I am toying with the idea of doing the W/VE island contest this weekend and try
a new antenna design. Would a 1/2 wave quad loop work as opposed to a full size
one? My neighbors do not like the vertical on the roof so I am trying for a
little direction and gain while keeping it small. Any help is welcome.
