I used to make black powder many years ago and can back up your statements.
Modern black powder burns much faster, It burns instantly. Pyrodex burns
much slower, much like the "traditional" powder I used to make.

In the olden days (30-40 years ago) you walked into a gun store and bought
black powder in one lb cans in whatever grain size (typically 2-3 f and up
to 5f. Now there is a modern substitute which is used in the same
quantities but is not "REAL" black powder and doesn't have a recipe for
making it which is 75% saltpeter (potassium nitrate), 15% charcoal, AND 10%
sulfur (there are other variations in common use by DIY folks.)
For the purpose of igniting CadWeld shots you can leave out the sulfur
(stinks a lot) and use 100 parts saltpeter and 24 parts charcoal. You want
fine powder 4f or 5f. Do not put the ingredients together in a mortar and
pestle or other grinding arrangement. You can grind the ingredients
separately with no worries and then mix them but do not grind the mixture
if you want to keep your eyes, fingers, etc in good working order.
I have never used Pyrodex black powder substitute (available at Walmart
stores with gun counters and other vendors) so am not qualified to comment
on the efficacy of using Pyrodex for igniting anything much less Cadweld
shots.
