With respect to the question about "go back to life as normal":
GDT manufacturers product data typically rates the number of shots for a
given tube based on the maximum surge current passing through the tube. For
example, the popular Littlefuse CG3 series are rated for 10 shots at 5kA or
1 shot at 10 kA. I recall reading somewhere that the relationship is not
at all linear. The surge current seen by a GDT is a function of a whole
lot of variables, of which strike current and the network of impedances for
"all" dissipation paths play an important part.
