I have seen several items at "Northern China Tools" that are the same as
items from "Harbor Freight from China" except for packaging, paint, and
stickers. Neither store has a monopoly on Chinese imports.
The hoist in question has an auto shutoff feature when the cable is
fully retracted. The rubber/plastic hockey puck looking thingy hits a
bent wire thing attached to a switch. It should be a fairly easy task
to rig that feature to stop the hoist motor when the cable arrives at
the limit you set.
Oh, YES, if you halve the line speed (insert a pulley) the max line
tension will stay the same but the lifting force will double (minus
pulley friction and lost energy flexing the cable... pretty negligible)
and of course the hoisting speed will be cut in half. No free lunch. MGH
capability per unit time is the same either single or double cable
hoist. (MGH is Mass, Gravity, Height) With a double line you can lift
twice as much but in twice the time to the same height.

The chatter on hear about using a HF electric hoist, I think this is the same
