Duty at Minot, Loring, Thule, etc. gave a whole new meaning to "Cold Warrior!"

At Minot AFB the lowest temp I was out in was -47F, not wind chill, straight thermometer. Minus 40 was routine. Wind chill was reported on the base's dial up weather report as the time on average it took for exposed flesh to freeze. They reported this down to 10 seconds and then just reported it as less than 10 seconds. One of our hi-pri considerations was NOT exposing flesh.

After leaving the USAF and heading south as far as I could go and not leave the country I went to San Diego State University and during a real cold snap there was a very light snow, just a few small flakes. Everyone in my calculus class including the instructor, EXCEPT ME ran to the window in awe to see show. Having just left a 3 winter tour in Minot I was not impressed.

Roger
I spent time at Loring AFB working ECM on B-52s. Late 70s, following a hot
humid tour in Thailand.

Winter was typically -20 deg with wind chills down to -65 and one night down
to -109 deg. Flight line work was not pleasant at those temps.

Took nearly all summer for the mountain of plowed snow in the parking lot to
melt.

SAC Sucks !

Sounds about par for Loring AFB in Caribou, Me. My last CG duty station was
the
LORAN station in Caribou. They have WINTER up there!

Dick, The answer is Minot Air Force Base, Minot, North Dakota

Been there, done that for 3 consecutive years. I know a couple radio intercept operators, one Morse and one non-Morse who came down from Elmendorf AFB, Alaska (Anchorage) and when they experienced the onset of winter at Minot and the -40 and worse temps wanted to go back to Alaska because the climate was milder.

Our Thule, Greenland base is where you go to fined worse climate than Minot. (not much worse.)
