Passive matching networks can only give you a mediocre match and only
over part of the band. Then you end up using a tuner in the shack
anyway.
Yes, this is a really good method if you are willing to go to the
trouble of designing and building the necessary hardware and running the
control line. It has the additional advantage of no "excess attenuation"
in the feedline due to mismatch at the band edges. That excess
attenuation is not a big deal if you're using big coax (a few tenths of
a dB).
