Make a claim on your house insurance? Wait until the Hurricane Sandy
outcome hits the Northeast. In Texas on new policies, the minimum
deductible is 1% and is going to 2% - you can do the math. Making a claim
against one's home insurance is vapor ware unless you have nothing but a
slab left. And even then for events like Katrina, Ike and Sandy as Florida
experienced, the insurance companies change the rules saying it's a disaster
and unilaterally raise the deductibles. Ken K5RG
Depends on where you are located, your history, and the insurance company.
I had a loss from wind and lightening a few years back and before I had
finished the elaborate ground system. When I turned in a claim they
asked about the antenna I had lost, The antenna they were asking about
was the only claim I had ever made and...it was from the earl 70's. It
was almost 40 years ago and at a different QTH. Insurance companies
have long memories and appear to share claim information.
We have replacement coverage but only use it if the device/item/damage
is worth it. Some say they have insurance for a reason and claim any
loss, but remember that company is in business to make a profit, not
just to help you out. Make a few small claims and they will be getting
it back in higher premiums. I'd much rather self insure for the small
stuff.
The US is host to the most violent weather in the world and with the
population increasing, Tornadoes are accounting for Billions of dollars
in claims. Add to that, the regularity of Hurricanes and although few in
number they are usually accompanied by massive damage. Then there are
the tremendous number of homes built in high risk areas. Claims have
outstripped some companies ability to pa directly, so it's no wonder we
have high rates, even in relatively low risk areas like Michigan.
The nice thing is so far this year the Hurricane season has been quite
mild...but it's not over yet.

Does anyone know of someone that can repair my DCU. We had a near lightening
strike that took out computers, routers, etc and the DCU.
