As Steve pointed out, there's a lot of different kinds of these things,
but there are handbooks from each mfr that tells you what size hole to
drill, what size bolt to use, what the pullout load is, etc.
They are potentially stronger than casting a bolt into the concrete.
They're really pretty nifty for a lot of applications where you're doing
retrofits or don't know the final placement until after the concrete is
down. The down side is cost and labor: drilling that hole and making
sure you don't hit rebar (or worse, post tension cables), etc.
