It's only 'critical' in the sense that at some point mutual coupling kicks
in at the closed-spaced nearfield. Its not a mystery. That's the principle
behind metamaterials. A Moxon is a folded two element Yagi.Its not a
metamaterial antenna.
NEC is not capable of accurately modeling such close spacings. Its listed
as an error condition to avoid .
