Without arrival angle data how would you know some antenna height change
is good, bad or indifferent.
I seem to recall Es prop (at least for 1 hop) is relatively high angle.
If this is what one is after, then lowering rather than raising the
antenna is a better idea. Many 6M ops find 20-25' works pretty well.
I doubt over the long haul (time not distance) you would see very little
difference between 40 and 50 feet, depending on your surrounding terrain.
I've found 115 feet for my 7L C3i to be outstanding for Es, F, and, Au,
BUT Es can be most any thing. Typically Es occurs anywhere between 55
and 100 miles of altitude (IE lower than F). The clouds may be close or
right on the radio horizon. It may be single or multi hop. So for
6-meters most of us go for what ever is handy because Es can be anything
from very low angle to very high angle. Now if you have the property and
checkbook, multi stacks are popular because you can select the best
angle. One ham near here had 3 or 4 stacked pair on which he could
select any combination from a single pair to all.
I have neither the real estate or checkbook for an installation like that.
BTW I went for 115 feet as it was the only open spot on the tower.

I have hills NW of me and going from 40 to 50 feet makes a big
difference. I ran the HTTA program on the
CD in the latest ARRL antenna handbook and it was very enlightening to
see how different heights affected
my antenna pattern. I would recommend running HFTA and see what it
tells you for your site. That is the
intended purpose of the program and it works very well.
