Aggregate concrete (in our market more commonly called "washed concrete") is
simply regular concrete that is finished differently. Instead of using
trowels to get the smooth surface, at that point in the curing process, the
upper layer of cement is washed away with water to expose the aggregate
which is contained in the ready-mix. This principle works well on mixes of
strength between 2500 & 4500 PSI, albeit the stronger mixes require more
precise timing of the washing operation.
If planning a washed concrete finish, you may choose to use a specific size
aggregate (gravel) in the mix, such as small pea gravel or another specific,
more uniform size than a standard mix. You may also choose to have more
aggregate added for a "denser" look on the surface. In most cases, your
local ready-mix plant can design your mix according to your strength
requirements.
