I have also had the sad experience of a cable failure on one of my LM-470
towers. My cables showed sign of surface rust, but the real failure
culprit was a rusted out pulley bearing. When raising the tower to get a
better
shot at the first P5 activity that pulley locked up and essentially froze
the cable travel putting an excessive strain on the cable and it broke. So
along with cable replacement be sure to check that every pulley is running
free and no signs of bearing rust. Then lubricate,

I now use the US Tower HD-589 and did not realize it vulnerability with
regard to the chain drive cable drum. That will be the next maintenance
action on the tower, along with repairing or replacing the 'UP' limit switch
which appears to have failed.

If you get details on replacing the cables please publish those data.

Hi Chris:

There was some superficial rust on one spot of a cable. This spot was on
the top of a pulley where the cable spent most of its time when up.
HOWEVER, this is not the spot where the cable broke. The place where the
cable broke looks perfect, even the inner strands.
