Richard's towers also survived, SOMEHOW, through all the snow / ice storms
while living in New York.

That JT1 card not only made the antennas work better, but it also held up
the tower physically because Richard's guy wires were at an 89 degree rise
angle and it still defies physics that the tower withstood the hurricanes it
  went through over the years.

I am not saying that I started this tradition, but I remember my first tower

in 1973 in Alvin, Texas around 1973. I placed at the bottom of the tower
base hole a JT1 card. That QSL selection was based on the rarest QSL that I
had that I felt I could part with. It was JT1-something on 20M SSB.

Since then, on the many, many towers that I have erected, I have always
placed a mixture of rare DX QSLs and contest QSO QSLs. It has always worked
well for me with operating results.

I honestly don't remember if that first QSL under the first tower base was
my idea or something that I had heard before.

  pour

I always heard it was supposed to be a JT card. Anyway, when I poured my
base, I threw in a bunch of cards, including a JT that actually wound up
touching the rebar base when it landed (I have a picture of it for proof). I

considered that very good juju. I also threw in cards from every continent
and a bunch of JA cards. Just for good measure, I threw in a card from
Martti to help with DXpeditions. I think I threw in about 40 or 50 cards,
based on some formula I had devised in my head, which of course has long
since passed through the sieves of my mind. It all seemed to make sense at
the time. Bottom line is that the antenna seems to work very well.

There must be some "official" site spelling out the folk lore of the "QSL in

the Hole". Perhaps Tom or someone else could weigh in there to educate the
  rest of us believers.

Well wait! It is according to what you want the antennas to do. If it is a
DX station, then you are correct. If it is a contest station, then a JA
card because you want large JA runs. And that's not just me saying that,
even though I have 54 years ham radio experience, I got it from my contest
Elmer, K5RC so it HAS to be right!
