I hope I don't get any hate mail for saying this, but I believe that
improving what's outside (antennas) will do more good than improving what's
inside (transceivers).

My G5RV is no slouch but on 20m I get reports that my signal is 20 to 30 dB
stronger on the beam. The beam is high, so there is not just antenna gain
but radiation angle involved as well I think.
No contest.....tower and beam always.
