I have been trying to talk my mother-in-law into sitting up on the tower a few
hours each day to run off the birds. She would scare off just about anything
ELSE that flies. The trade off just wasn't worth the trouble. When the birds
poop at least it will wash off the roof in the rain.

I had the same problem - crows are really smart, and it wasn't long
until they discovered that the "owl" didn't move. I took it down and
attached some scraps of reflective vinyl that I cut from scrap I found
after a neighbor kid's party. Cut it in squares and super-glued it to
the owl on nylon strings so they fluttered in the wind every which
way. They squalked and raised cain nearby, but never landed on the
boom again.
