By the pound (or more accurately, the hundredweight or ton), although if
you have a particularly low density load (say, a truckload of foam),
they will charge by volume (converted to an assumed weight).
You'll also need to determine what your freight "class" is.
Note that interstate freight rates are regulated, so all companies will
charge the same per hundredweight rate. It's the extras and service
features that distinguish one carrier from another. One company will
charge you an arm and a leg to pickup and dropoff other than at a
freight terminal, others won't. Some companies will use a truck with a
lift gate, others won't. Some will schedule to your convenience, others
will take your load, run it to a yard, then wait til they can build up a
full load.
