US Towers require ASTM F1554 Grade 36 anchor rods. Below is some
information on the subject as well as links to manufacturers where you
can buy the anchors.

ONE IMPORTANT NOTE...
If you EVER plan on upgrading to a MA-550 tower. Have the 3/4" holes on
your base drilled out to accept 1" anchor bolts! Both freestanding
bases (MA-40 and MA-550) have 8" square base plates and 5.5" hole
centers. Opening the holes to 1.032" and using the 1" anchors will
allow you to upgrade to a MA-550 in the future.

BE SURE YOUR CONCRETE BASE IS THE REQUIRED SIZE FOR THE MA-550. If
pulling a permit, they will have no problem exceeding the size of the
foundation listed on the drawings for the MA-40.

I just did this for a customer here in Southern CA. I had the hole
professionally enlarged using a horizontal drill press machine. This
insured that we maintained the 5.5" hole centers!

Do it right the first time and you will have no problems. Try to do it
cheap and you will get what you pay for!

Here is information I've collected on anchor bolts...

ASTM F1554 Grade 36 vs. ASTM A36

Question:
What is the difference between ASTM A36 anchor rods and ASTM F1554 Grade
36 anchor rods? They both have the same tensile and yield properties.

Answer:
The difference is that ASTM F1554 is a standard developed specifically
for anchor rods. ASTM A36 is a material specification that applies to
mild carbon structural steel in general. The ASTM F1554 standard is a
complete product specification for anchor rods, and includes three
grades of rod, one of which is Grade 36, which is essentially A36 (or
A307) rod material. Each of the rod strengths in F1554 requires a color
coding on the end to facilitate easy identification in the field. The
standard also stipulates requirements for threading and other
dimensional characteristics. Because of these unique features pertaining
to anchor rods, it is the preferred standard for anchor rods.

The AISC Specification permits the use of other materials for anchor
rods as defined in Section A3 of the AISC Specification. Note that other
specifications provide very little of the anchor-rod-specific value
found in ASTM F1554.

Scope

The ASTM F1554 specification was introduced in 1994 and covers anchor
bolts designed to anchor structural supports to concrete foundations.
F1554 anchor bolts can take the form of either headed bolts, straight
rods, or bent anchor bolts. The three grades 36, 55, and 105 designate
the minimum yield strength (ksi) of the anchor bolt. The bolts can be
either cut or roll threaded and a weldable grade 55 can be substituted
for grade 36 at the supplier’s option. Color coding on the end - 36
blue, 55 yellow, and 105 red – helps facilitate easy identification in
the field. Permanent manufacturer and grade marking is allowed under the
S2 supplementary requirements.

Applications for F1554 anchor bolts include columns in structural steel
framed buildings, traffic signal and street lighting poles, and overhead
highway sign structures to name just a few.

GRADES
F1554 Grade 36 Low carbon, 36 ksi yield steel anchor bolts
F1554 Grade 55 Low alloy, 55 ksi yield steel anchor bolts
F1554 Grade 105 Alloy, heat treated, high strength 105 ksi yield steel

Question: I picked up a nice MA-40 with MARB, and am installing it
myself
at my QTH. IS there any thing special about the 3/4" x 27" Anchor
Bolts. I
need all four but they are about 50$ each plus 50$ for shipping, close
to
what I paid for the entire tower set up!. I will not scrimp for safety
reasons if the Mfr bolts are THE ONES to use. But was wondering about
alternatives?? Maybe something locally from Home depot?
SAFETY first in any case and if it costs $250 for the right bolts so be

 it! Tnx
